Is handwriting dead?

Is handwriting quickly becoming a thing of the past?

With the advent of laptop and tablet computers so much of our children’s education takes place on a screen away from the traditional pen and paper.

Juliette Bentley is a teacher at Mt St Michael’s College and a founder of the schools Writing club, her aim is to to re-establish a love of handwriting in students.

“What I found was the writing is important. The stories they write, the ideas they come across, the exploration of different things and being able to choose a topic of interest.”

“What I didn’t expect and which I think now is perhaps more important are all the ancillary skills that come along with that.”

“They listen to each other, their listening becomes particularly thoughtful and critical, they engage and they retain information.”
